Effect of metal concentration on growth and luminescence of luminous bacteria strains isolated from golfo de Nicoya, Costa Rica

چکیده

Luminescence in bacteria is catalyzed by luciferase. When these microorganisms are exposed to toxic substances, the bioluminescent enzyme system can be inhibited. The objective of this study was analyze potential that offer as native bioindicators coastal marine pollution. dynamics luminescence intensity visual classification and effect metal concentration on growth 25 strains luminescent bacteria, isolated during 2016 from seawater samples gulf Nicoya, Costa Rica, evaluated disk diffusion method. sensitivity each strain different concentrations (0.1, 0.5 1 mg mL-1) Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb Zn determined its phenotype. In susceptible strains, a range less than inhibitory affected expression luminescence. Strains with intense defined zones inhibition were considered have greater for monitoring environmental toxicity. More studies required determine minimum inhibit respect tested metals other potentially substances ecosystems Rica.

Composition of the zooplankton community, with emphasis in copepods, in Punta Morales, Golfo De Nicoya, Costa Rica.

The composition of the mesozooplanktonic community was studied in the Punta Morales estuary, Gulf of Nicoya, Pacific coast of Costa Rica, during 1997. Oblique plankton hauls were performed during high and low tide using a 280 microm mesh screen net equipped with a flowmeter. The community was characterized by holoplanktonic and meroplanktonic organisms. For the holoplanktonic community, the mai...

Preliminary survey of a nemertean crab egg predator, Carcinonemertes, on its host crab, Callinectes arcuatus (Decapoda, Portunidae) from Golfo de Nicoya, Pacific Costa Rica

The possible presence of egg predators in brood masses of portunid crabs from Pacific Central America has not been studied yet. This survey reports the finding of a nemertean crab egg predator on the portunid crab, Callinectesarcuatus, from the Golfo de Nicoya, Pacific Costa Rica. Nemerteans were found in the egg masses of 26 out of the 74 crabs for a prevalence of 35%. The intensity (mean numb...

On Branchiostoma californiense (Cephalochordata) from the Gulf of Nicoya estuary, Costa Rica.

The cephalochordates are represented by the lancelets, of which species of the genus Branchiostoma are the best known. In recent years, these organisms have been the center of activity of studies focusing on the phylogenetic relationships of the chordates. In 1980, a survey of the benthos at 48 stations in the Gulf of Nicoya estuary, Pacific coast of Costa Rica, yielded 265 specimens of the lan...

The Minimum Concentration of Oxygen for Luminescence by Luminous Bacteria

A method is described for measuring the concentration of oxygen to allow just perceptible luminescence of luminous bacteria. The value turns out to be extraordinarily low, about 0.005 mm. Hg pressure O(2) or 1 part by weight oxygen dissolved in 3,700,000,000 cc. sea water.
